1. Science Council Launches Fashion & Textiles Section On Future Morph Site

This week not only sees the beginning of the London Design Festival, but also London Fashion Week. To tie in with the latter, The Science Council are launching a new section on their Future Morph website, entitled Fashion & Textiles. The page explores many different areas within this field, from wearable technology, to textiles used for medicine, as well as how science and fashion can work together for a more sustainable world.

The page is also a great for tutors as it contains learning resources as well as an insight into the work which different people are doing in this area so as to inspire students with regards to career choices. If you’re interested in this area, then it’s definitely worth a read!

The Science Council very kindly asked us to contribute towards this section of the site as MzTEK has been doing  a lot of work with soft circuits recently, including the Hacked Human Orchestra project in collaboration with Guerilla Science as well as a variety of workshops.

We have been running classes in the Lilypad Arduino as well as a beginners soft circuit course in which students can create a soft toy with light-up eyes, which you can participate in at the V&A’s Digital Design Weekend this week!

To read our article as well as others in the section, check out the Future Morph website.

  2. Electromagnetic Field Workshops

TWO AMAZINGLY GEEKY WORKSHOPS FOR WOMEN AT THE ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD FESTIVAL…

    __________________________________________

Introduction to interactive and wearable technology, using the Arduino and/or LilyPad Arduino.

This workshop will focus on the principles of interactive and physical computing using the Arduino. We will introduce some basic interaction using sensors and lights, which can also be applied to the LilyPad Arduino, a wearable micro controller used to make interactive cloths and textiles.

This will be a 2hour workshop over the weekend of the EMF camp. Time and day tbc.

There will be opportunities throughout the weekend to develop projects, and learn more about soft-circuits and e-textiles.

MzTEK will provide an Arduino Uno, sensors and LED’s to borrow.  If you would like to use an Arduino LilyPad you will need to provide your own kit.  Please see our MzTEK EMF wiki page for where to purchase items.

    __________________________________________

    sketchPatch generative art badge making

sketchPatch is an online programming playground, using the programming language Processing. The workshop is a game of tag, in which everyone contributes to each others work as they are passed around the group.

At the end of the day we will print sketches out and turn them into BADGES!

So come and join sketchPatch.net in a round of sketchTag!

    Where & When

The workshops will be held at Electromagnetic Field Festival, for which you will need to purchase ticks here… Electromagnetic Field

There is no additional tuition fee for these workshop, but you may need/want to buy your own kit.

To sign up get in touch at info@mztek.org or add your name to the MzTEK EMF wiki page.

Visit our EMF page for more info

  3. Wearable Tech – LilyPad Arduino Intro

Beginners guide to the LilyPad Arduino for wearable technology.

Join our one day introduction to the LilyPad Arduino and get your garments interactive!

During the course of the day you will be introduced to the basics of soft circuitry, some basic electronics, Arduino software, programming, and reading a sensor.
At the end of the day you will have a functioning interactive patch, which you can sew onto a garment, bag or cushion cover.

    PLEASE BRING WITH YOU:

    • A piece of fancy fabric of your choice –  it is best to use something non-stretchy and stiff, something like cotton or canvas.
    • If you want to bring your own laptop, please make sure you have installed the latest Arduino Software on it.
    • A USB to mini-USB  (you are bound to have one somewhere, we thought best not to buy more ;)

    Fee:

£75 +  booking fee – Includes discounted LilyPad Arduino
This includes the LilyPad Arduino, LilyPad Battery Holder and FTDI board.

    or

£35 +  booking fee – Not including LilyPad Arduino
This is for those who do not require a LilyPad Arduino Kit as above – There will not be spares to borrow unfortunately, please make sure you have one for the workshop if you purchase this ticket.
